Call for Submissions

We would like to hear from educators who would be interested in contributing to this discourse, speaking to topics such as, but not limited to:
1) Discussion/demonstration of course materials, assessments, etc. in online courses, that highlight the practical relevance and application of geography and/or geospatial tools for students, and sharing experiences and student feedback on those assessments and materials.
2) Stories, observations, and/or evidence of how students in online courses are applying those geographic skills and a geographic perspective beyond the classroom, expanding the community of geographers;
3) Demonstration of how the online format is uniquely suited to expand the community of geography to 'non-geographers'.

Description

The 2015 Annual Meeting of the American Association of Geographers had a special focus on Geography and Online Education. Additionally, one of this year’s meeting themes, Expanding the Community of Geographers, speaks to the broad reach of the online platform. As online geography programs and course offerings have continued to expand and evolve since the 2015 focus, and given this year’s theme, it is important to revisit the topic of online geography education, and specifically how online education can expand the community of geographers.

This paper session is an opportunity for educators who teach a diverse group of learners: undergraduate and graduate students (both geography majors and non-majors), professionals, and/or the general population of learners (through MOOCs and similar programs) to share their experiences with using the online platform to broaden awareness of the discipline of geography, and share its valuable contribution to problem-solving and global citizenship.

While online teaching and learning presents challenges, it also provides a tremendous opportunity to connect a variety of audiences and build a diverse community of geographers worldwide. In this way, educators can share spatial thinking skills with people, and in places, that might not otherwise be reached. Further, the benefits of online learning are such that online courses often reach students who may be new to the discipline, offering educators yet another chance to broaden the reach and use of geography and geographic tools. Application-based assessment design and competency-based learning are but two of the many ways that these students (or audiences) can learn to “do” geography beyond the classroom, and incorporate the geographic perspective in their daily lives--whether in work or research related tasks, or as informed stakeholders in the affairs of a local, national, or global community.

By sharing their research and experiences, educators can bring to light these unique opportunities and also address some of the challenges that can arise.
