These panel and paper sessions will be organized broadly around the concept of urban climate justice and the seeming disconnect between rhetoric and reality – between urban theorists who conceptualize urban climate justice and concrete, implementable plans and policies; between self-professed progressive cities’ promotion of their climate plans and their ongoing failure to address justice concerns such as inequality, homelessness, and environmental harms; between the ardent calls for climate justice among activists and suitably radical visions for alternative just and sustainable urban futures.

More specifically, we are interested in the ways that cities and urban regions in the era of climate change are attempting to reconcile competing objectives for economic growth, policies for low-carbon development, and concerns over social and environmental justice, or choosing new and alternative pathways. We suggest this opens up multiple avenues for empirical and theoretical work, including, but not limited to:
• Questions of scale (territorial, temporal, and otherwise)
• Issues of governance, policy, and planning
• Dimensions of social and spatial inequalities, such as questions of race, class, and gender
• Visions of alternative futures / imaginaries
• The disconnect between theory and activism; or between theory and activism, on the one hand, and actually existing urban policies and programs, on the other
• And others
