Description

This author meets critics session provides a diversity of perspectives on two new books on environmental justice: From the Inside Out: The Fight for Environmental Justice within Government Agencies by environmental justice scholar Dr. Jill Lindsey Harrison (MIT Press, 2019) and Climate Change from the Streets: How Conflict and Collaboration Strengthen the Environmental Justice Movement by planning scholar Dr. Michael Mendez. (Yale University Press 2019). Harrison lifts the veil on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and other environmental regulatory agencies to offer new insights into why they fail to reduce harmful toxics and other hazards in our nation’s most environmentally overburdened and vulnerable communities. Mendez explores the perspectives and influence that low-income people bring to their advocacy work on climate change with a focus on California. By pairing books that critically examine state agencies and social movement perspectives this panel highlights two distinct yet intertwined venues in which contemporary struggles for environmental justice are performed. Harrison and Mendez’s new books will serve as touchstones for critical environmental justice studies by applying a close ethnographic reading of the forces that are driving the development of this dynamic and transformative social phenomenon.
