Quality of life includes both physical and social dimensions. Remote sensing technologies have been traditionally used in assessing natural and urbanization-induced environmental conditions. Survey investigations can provide insight for human conception of natural and social components which is associated with qualify of life. The study of quality of life shall benefit from current remote sensing technologies, e.g., high-resolution sensors, and thermal capability of instruments. The objective of this study is to investigate quality of life for Hampton Roads, Virginia based on a series of Landsat 8 images covering Hampton Roads in recent years and a set of quality of life survey data conducted in the situ area for years 2010-2018. More specifically, multiple factors are derived from Landsat images, including Normalized Difference Vegetation Index, Normalized Difference Built-Up Index, elevation, slope, and selected landscape metrics as indicators of physical conditions. The outcomes on quality of life survey are transformed into numerical information. The assessment of quality of life is conducted by combining remote sensing derived variables with survey outcome by using statistical analysis. The study results can provide background information for urban resilience and development.
