River flood has increased significantly over the last few decades, accelerated by land use and hydrological changes. One of the sectors that suffer huge losses during river flood every year in agriculture. In the USA, farmers have suffered crop loss due to river floods several times in recent years. Flood also delayed planting season, reduced yield and often forced farmers to cultivate alternative crops in the field. In this study, using the flood loss estimation software HEC-FIA (prepared by Army Corps of Engineers), we calculate the agriculture flood loss in the Mississippi River Basin. Agriculture flood loss depends on a lot of different factors, the extent and duration of the flood event, the time of flood arrival, the planting and harvesting date of each crop, plantation cost, yield and price. In our analysis, we factor in all these parameters to predict the potential loss for a 100-year flood event. The result shows the blockgroup wise spatial distribution of predicted agriculture flood loss (in US$) in the Mississippi river basin. This information will be useful to understand the geography of river flood loss and help prioritize crop planning and possible interventions.
