Effect of Environmental Factors on the Distribution of Vegetations in Siheung Saltmarsh, Korea

Attempts to find the relationship between the distribution of vegetation communities and the environmental factors have been studied in the fields of natural geography and ecology for a long time, In general, it is known that environmental stress such as high salt inflow from seawater and seasonal flooding has direct and indirect effects on vegetation growth. Based on this academic background, the purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between vegetation communities and the environmental factors in the salt marsh. The designated area is covered with P. latifolius-S. Japonica. To understand the relationship between soil, hydrological and vegetation factors, statistical techniques such as correlation analysis, principal component analysis, and path analysis were used. As a result, the factors explaining the distribution of vegetation communities were different according to the characteristics of the species. On the other hand, unlike previous studies, elevation was found to be an indirect effect through the relationship with stress from saline seawater, rather than a direct influence on the formation and distribution of P. latifolius and S. japonica. This result contradicts to a traditional perspective: hodological factors control soil factors. However, the distribution of species in needs to consider not only direct influences such as the environmental factors and interactions among species, but also indirect influences that may occur through interactions between factors.
