"How Did I Get Here?" is a simple question with complex geographical ramifications. Using a series of maps, I will trace my ancestry from Africa to Northern Europe, then to San Jose, CA (where I was born), and finally to Independence, CA, where I now live. We all come from various places on the Earth, and end up where we are often due to migrations initiated by world historic forces over many thousands of years. On the other hand, some people just stayed where they were, such as the Owens Valley Paiute, whose ancestral lands I now call home. By looking back at where we are from, wherever that may be, we can better understand where we are in this present time of cultural conflict, cooperation, and change.
