I invite contributions providing conceptual and empirical insights on the following topics (or others, suggested by you, around the same broad topics):
• Agencies, agendas, coalitions, power entrenchments framing the unequal smart city
• Challenging the smart destination: tactic urbanism and grassroots experiences of digital empowerment in tourist places
• Gentrifying through smart: emerging geographies of digital exclusion and social change
• The power of smart hyper-mobilities vs ‘sticky’ local communities: ethnographies of marginalisation and disconnection
The objective of this session is to present contributions that challenge the rhetoric of ‘smart’ places, examining how new avenues of socio-spatial exclusion are opened through the uneven empowerment of communities of users of smart services and systems.
These contributions are expected to draw from conceptual approaches in geography inspired by the mobilities paradigm, as well as from radical and critical thinking on sociotechnical regimes of 'smart'. It could be of interest for urban geography, tourism and planning scholars as well as other social scientists engaging with mobilities, space and place.
