Panelists will discuss Laura Harjo’s book Spiral to the Stars: Mvskoke Tools of Futurity (University of Arizona Press, 2019). Harjo’s generative book draws on Mvskoke experiences, practices, and theories to conceptualize four concepts fundamental to Mvskoke futurity: este-cate sovereignty (Indigenous kinship sovereignty); community (and body) knowledge; collective power; and the imagining, constructing, and accessing of Mvskoke spatialities. Spiral to the Stars provides resources for envisioning a map to the next world using futurity as an analytical tool. As an Indigenous mapper and cartographer, Harjo develops what she calls “way-finding tools” that “communities can use to operationalize their knowledge without requiring so-called experts to identify their areas of genius.”
