The US boasts one of the safest drinking water supplies in the world. Despite this reputation, numerous challenges face the drinking water industry and must be addressed in order to ensure that the US continues to have access to safe and affordable drinking water. These challenges include policy and governance, regulation, water infrastructure and operations (Lander), workforce (Anderson), water quality, water injustice, accessibility (Gasteyer), public health (Manners), and health outcomes (VanDerslice). Though these challenges occur in different domains, they do not exist in silos. Instead they influence and compound one another and as a result academic, industry, regulatory, and community collaboration is crucial in holistically assessing and addressing the obstacles facing the industry. This panel will discuss the various challenges facing the water industry across the United States and highlight how collaboration with stakeholders is currently utilized (and must continue to be utilized) in order to address barriers facing the drinking water industry.
