Description

James Blaut's passing in 2000 was a terrible loss to the academy and liberation struggles around the world. A radical geographer, Jim worked indefatigably on issues of social justice and inequality; enhanced our understanding of racism, imperialism, and Eurocentrism; and contributed directly to the advancement of socialist and anti-colonial struggles. With the co-sponsorship of Antipode and ACME, the Socialist and Critical Geography Specialty Group (SCGSG) of the American Association of Geographers (AAG) presents the James Blaut Award for Socialist and Critical Geography at the AAG Annual Meeting. The award recognizes a scholar who has: (1) made significant contributions to radical geography, (2) promoted activism against oppressive power relations both within and outside the academy, and (3) bridged radical theory and practice.

This year, the SCGSG honors Richa Nagar, Professor of the College in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. Her multi-lingual and multi-genre work blends scholarship, creative writing, theatre, and activism to build alliances with people’s struggles and to engage questions of ethics, responsibility, and justice. Richa has published eight books and dozens of essays, articles, plays, and poems in English and Hindi, including her latest book Hungry Translations: Relearning the World Through Radical Vulnerability (2019). Richa has worked closely with the Sangtin Kisan Mazdoor Sangathan, a movement of farmers and laborers in India’s Sitapur District and is co-creator of Parakh, a multi-sited community theatre project, and the online journal AGITATE! Unsettling Knowledges.
